Imagination

I had to create a set of 3 posters which would provide advice for a life lesson.

I chose to focus on the idea of the wisdom that you should remember what made you happy as a child and bring it back into your dull life. Being an adult can be dull, don’t grow up too fast and remember your childhood. Enrich your life by bringing your childhood back. Don’t forget your childlike creativity. Don’t lose your childhood imagination

I started with the first image of a child to represent the childhood creativity and imagination you have at a young age. I wanted to have her facing back so its more ambiguous as to who it is, where it could be any young girl. This can therefore resonate with more people as it is not a specific person but of an overall persona.

I used A3 watercolour paper and knew I wanted to use watercolour paint because I was inspired by the beautiful artwork that could be created by paint splatters and abstract colours. I also bought a set of waterproof pens to go with it so that the pens would not smudge and you would still get the outline of ink to enhance the drawing.

Title: Aged 4

I wanted the girl in the same position for the second poster to show it is the same person.

To make it more similar to the first image, i also added more animals. The birds transforms into pigeons and technology replaces nature.

For the 3rd image I had her in the same perspective but I wanted her to come back round to her childhood again. I did this by placing certain objects in the same place as the 1st poster.

Title: Aged 30

When you are a child, you view the world in a crazy and colourful way, full of creativity and imagination. As you get older you are told to grow up too soon and you lose that childhood innocence and outlook on life. My advice would be to stay in touch with your inner child and see the world in colour. Being an adult can be dull and full of responsibilities, but always remember what made you happy as a child and enrich your life with it. Don’t lose your childhood creativity.

Paprgram

I had to come up with an idea that would merge Instagram and the use of paper together. I experimented with ideas of creating a pop-up book featuring Instagram scenes, tailored to a persons Instragram. I also thought about recreating the Instagram photo scene with papercrafted objects.

I looked in particular at these paper craft artists which I really liked the work of.

I then thought of a simpler and more consumer friendly idea so that they would actually be able to receive the physical product rather than simply get a paper version picture.

I experimented with a sample piece of my idea to see if it would work out.IMG_20170124_211608_024.jpg

I thought it ended up working quite well so I made more. I looked for more real instagram photos that I could base it off of so it’s more realistic.

After creating all mine of the Paprgrams, I thought of a logo. This is the main brand logo and the app icon.

I then worked on creating the video for it.

Please, No Grease

The issue i’ve focused on is an environmental one where I want to tackle people who throw their cooking oil down the sink which results is serious blockages. I wanted to create a visual story showing what actually happens when you pour grease down the sink.

I had ideally wanted to make the whole video a graphic piece, however I thought that it would take too long to create. After receiving feedback to make the whole video a motion graphic one, I decided to give it a try. The most challenging thing about creating the video was the troubleshooting, when a layer would do something what it wasn’t supposed to do and trying to figure out how to fix it. This would get especially difficult when there were loads of layers and were all intertwined with each other. This made it hard to change one thing when it would change another thing in response.

tubeposter1plumber

I experimented with some poster ideas, using some more humorous lines. I had previously wanted to have a brand collaboration with thames water and Toyota since Toyota was a more environmentally friendly car brand and they make popular hybrid cars. This would then work with the biodiesel since there was the issue of most cars being regular petrol rather than diesel.

Formative Feedback:

I like the reused oil idea. But rather than starting a new brand (which feels massive and hard to do with collections etc.) perhaps think about how one brand could do this. For instance, would it make sense for a car manufacturer? An energy supplier? Less as an ongoing thing but as a way to generate some positive publicity.

Pride Lock

Pride Lock- I wanted to have something which draws attention to the campaign such as a publicity stunt. I wanted to create a video visually presenting the idea. Somewhere where people can put the locks. I need to relate it more to getting tested.

Ideas included maybe having the pride lock trees travel around the UK, so people can add even more locks. Move to different parks in London. then sell the trees and earn profits for charity. I thought about social media, including Facebook profile filters, snapchat filter.

Formative Feedback:

On the Pride Lock, I liked the symbology of safety. It reminded me of the recent #safetypin movement. Have a look at that and consider how the same success could be applied here?

– The other good thing she identified was the need for vulnerable men to make a commitment to getting tested. If she honed in on that as an action rather than just being about showing support, where might it go?

Revolt

BRIEF 1: DEVELOP A NEW FASHION BRAND

GOAL

To overthrow the clichés of the fashion industry that pressure young girls to conform to a beauty ideal. This revolution will fight fashion through fashion, using a new She Said range as our trojan horse.

THE CHALLENGE

We need to develop a new fashion brand where the clothes carry our message. Beyond the range itself, we’ll need an identity ( a rally cry and a symbol) and a Mind Bomb that can draw attention to the campaign.

Linked to a website: thats what she said- acts as a voice to 15-18 the pressures they feel, society, feelings… it takes the quotes and reformats it into different handwritten text. We need to try to create a new fashion brand- new name could be similar to ‘what she said’. I thought about how the fashion industry treats young girls, this is a brand for young girls. Fashion is a means for self expression. The clothes you wear are devices to express yourself and represent you. How fashion can be used for self expression, headbands, current, badges. How the quotes can be used in the clothing and blend into the brand.

Mind Bomb- take the quotes and turn them into positive messages. Screen Shot 2016-12-01 at 1.30.33 pm.png

BRIEF 2: GREETING CARDS FOR EVERYONE

GOAL

A world where everybody can enjoy someone’s best wishes.
This revolution will create a new getting cards range that provides a way for anyone to give and receive their best wishes.

Society doesn’t represent Britain’s diversity in an accurate way with age, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, disability. Greetings cards- Blue is for boys, pink is for girls. Not really any cards for gay couples or disabled kids or christian festivals. Idea- create a new range of greetings cards which accurately reflect diversity.

Ideas- Happy Eid- Ramadan,Happy chinese new year, St Patricks day, Indian ‘Holi day’ Festival of colour, Jewish Hanukkah, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Body day- Buddhism, kwanzaa

I asked an Indian Hindu what he celebrates- Diwali, army came back when they beat demon God. Lit up the village to say welcome home from the fight. Nevrati 9 day festival, Raksha bandhan, Holi – color festival, Gunpati visurgence, Independence day India, Kite flying day India

I asked a Polish person what he celebrates- Polish Easter, Mother’s Day – 26th of May – Just wanted to include this because its date is different to the UK one heh, Battle of Warsaw  – 15th of August, All Saints Day, Independence Day – 11th November and of course Christmas. Another thing that I could say about Polish culture is that they also celebrate their name day. Not their birthday but their nameday. As in if your name is Marcin you would celebrate your name day on 24th of October or some other date. Mostly they celebrate their name day after their birthday.

I also asked someone from Sweden what they celebrate. Easter, National Day of Sweden – they just put up like tons of Swedish flags up and stuff. Midsummer – in June. Saint Lucy’s Day- now this is a thing that not a lot of people know about Sweden, little girls and boys dress up in this white dress and stuff holding a candle and sing as well. So a fact about Sweden is that once they finish Highschool they celebrate it like a lot. Just like UK celebrates University Graduations hard, Sweden celebrates high school more than their University graduation.

I wanted to use different languages as well. Possible rally cry. Don’t leave them out- one for every occasion

BRIEF 3: AIDS & LGBT community
THE GOAL:
To stop The stigma against LGBT communities that prevents them protecting themselves from AIDS

THE CHALLENGE

We need to develop a revolution that raises awareness of the issue and raises money to fight it. This means an identity ( a rally cry and a symbol ), an action that can drive donations plus a Mind Bomb that can draw attention to the campaign.

LGBT Love Latch

HIV and AIDS are on the rise again because of the increase in hate for LGBT. There is a stigma against them where they don’t want to get checked for HIV so are unlikely to get tested. Raising awareness for this issue, actions to get people to donate. Doing something interesting, finding a new way to get people to donate money for a cause. Provocative act to get people angered to are likely to contribute.

Possible Rally Cries- In the time it took for you to have your lunch break, you could have gotten tested for HIV

Get checked or get decked.

get tested or you’ll be bested

Don’t spread it, get tested

HIV- idea of getting tested before you spread it to your lover and everyone else you sleep with.

Poster- look at all the lives you ruined when you could have been tested at the prick of a finger

Or ad could be that you cut your finger on loads of things and infected people- but if only you pricked your finger on a test you would have known in 60 seconds

BRIEF 4 (OPEN) : CREATE A REVOLUTION

THE CHALLENGE

Think of this as an open brief. You need to find the fight, and build a brand that can work towards changing it.

You’ll need to have the four components in place to get it going:
> An action that can help people make the difference
> An identity formed from a distinctive rally cry and symbol
> A mind bomb which can get in the news to make the revolution famous

Lots of issues in the world to sell to a brand. Needs to be something where you can see where a brand can be involved.

Issue- people throwing oil down the drain-

Rally cries- Don’t sink it, if you wouldn’t drink it. Use your brain, not the drain. Ditch it, don’t sink it. Pipe down. Avoid blockages. its not liquid, That plumber’s crack? you don’t need to see that. you can recycle cooking oil. Please, no grease.

Issue is people aren’t educated in oil disposal.

Action- Every year after Christmas, there is a pop up shop where your cooking oil can be converted to biodiesel. you come in and exchange your oil for fuel. Or donate your oil and get a discount off your fuel. Encourage people to go to restaurants asking for their fuel. Its not so expensive to make on a smaller scale. Its expensive because you need big equipment to do it on a larger scale.

How is cooking oil converted to biodiesel?

Large amounts of cooking oil often equate to serious amounts of fuel that can potentially be created and sold – a major reason why many restaurant chains are recycling and selling their used cooking oil on an industrial scale. At-home fuel producers, however, are on the rise. With a little knowledge of chemistry and some time, you too could be producing your own biodiesel.

After much investigation we found as well as causing nasty blockages that are costly and difficult to unblock, these blockages can cause the sewerage to overflow into Rivers, streams and even domestic dwellings. In the event of a Bio Disc or Septic tank, oil and grease can suffocate the workings leading to major problems within these systems.Screen Shot 2016-12-01 at 1.48.04 pm.png

Magnetic Designer

Idea:

  • Sharable relatable videos for social media such as Facebook and YouTube.
  • Content that most people in the design industry would have experienced.
  • Video about the things clients say.
  • Humorous because they have had similar feedback or dealt with similar clients.

I based this idea off of some of the images I had seen posted on the website called ‘What not to say’ to a graphic designer. I was at first confused whether the content was created by Dennis himself however upon further research found it was created by another designer. I then thought about how this could be used to draw people in a different way. I researched different things that graphic designers all go through, for example money issues and working long hours to reach a deadline. Since there was so much, I thought that a video series idea would work well as that creates steady content which will give people more incentive to follow so that they can watch more. The video I created is an example of one of the sharable video ideas on the things clients say to designers. I thought that it relates well to the target audience for Magnetic Designer and is easily do-able. This was another fun edit where it was interesting researching some of the crazy things clients can say to designers. Overall, I would grade myself a B.

Fish Island Labs

My general idea for this project was to film people in the space interacting with each other as well as the great scenery around the area such as the lovely river and the nearby greenery. Using videos with more visual information is useful in helping people to make an informed decision on which office space to choose. This would work to help sell the space as they would be able to see what a great working environment it could be. In this mock up video I created in particular, I compared a boring office life to the more enlightening one Fish Island Labs would be. I thought about the pros of the office such as its great warm and comforting feel in comparison to a cold boring office routine.

Overall, it was quite fun to edit this as I used short detailed clips to give it a dramatic feel. I made sure that I found a good background audio to go along with it to make it even more dramatic as well as align the timings of the music. I would grade myself a C/B

National Media Museum

Idea: My idea for this brief was to make the website more visually appealing by focusing on the images the inventory that they had rather than lay out all the text about the object first.

I created a mock up website design and navigation video to demonstrate how the idea would work with a more visually lead website design. I thought about how you shop online and how that is layed out so that you can clearly see all the images of the products. This helps to show instantly that there is a large range of products held. This is also true for the museum, which has a lot of undiscovered objects that are very much visually and historically appealing.

With this project, I must have misinterpreted the brief as the client feedback was that they did not ask for a website design but rather specifically, a timeline design in particular. I interpreted the task we had in that we had more creative freedom to decide what method would be best to display their collections. Overall, I would grade myself a C.

RE-UP Library Project

Part1 design

Idea:

  • A story about a a young girl who’s life was changed through books and the library program.
  • Before, she saw no future for herself, wanting to be a bin lady.
  • After the library program she wanted to become something better than she was and had a better capability to do so.
  • Video to look as if drawn by the young girl, telling her story.

Part2 design

Once of the difficulties I faced was that since it was such a big and simply ‘long’ file, I wasn’t able to insert it directly into a lot of programs. This made my plans to animate the little bits of individual parts a lot more difficult and would take a lot more time to convert into photoshop layers. I created this in illustrator, drawing out the individual pieces, using the width tool to warp the depth of the strokes, giving the characters and objects more personalisation.

For the audio, I got my best friends little sister to do the voiceover. It was quite difficult to get her to go through the whole script without making a mistake or pausing. I therefore had to edit it quite a bit which is why it can sound somewhat robotic at times. This is also the version that I sped up a bit in order to keep a faster pace at the beginning of the story so the audience wouldn’t be bored.

Overall, this project took quite some time and  worked on the finer details however, it was a lot more do-able since we had a week and a half to complete it rather than a week. Since we had a bit longer, it felt good to challenge myself as to what I think I could complete in a week and a half. I would grade myself a B as this one took a lot of time, however it would have been nice to do little drawing animations but issues with the format made that difficult.

EVE- short film production

Screen Shot 2016-06-04 at 1.37.39 pm

Idea:

  • Create a public experimental video- Film in London as a social experiment to gain reactions
  • Flash Mob style- involving more people to attract attention.
  • Performance Art- Intense and thoughtful like the mood of the film.
  • Consist of androgynous people rubbing their heads together.

I created this poster to represent the film using different blend modes in photoshop and lots of masks. The poster itself can be printed or shared as a digital image on social media such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Screen Shot 2016-06-04 at 1.38.00 pm

I also created a poster inviting people to the flash mob. In terms of design, I wanted the text to look as if it was moulded to the shape of the body which is why some of the text looks warped. However, since the photo itself didn’t have too much depth to it, you can only see the moulding in a few parts of the body, such as the collarbone and the facial features.

Overall, I think that my idea could have been more developed once again but I find thinking of a good idea the hardest part and so I have to settle for an okayish idea or else I wouldn’t be able to come up with anything at all. I would grade myself a C.
